. >> m >> pam: there were two burglaries that were stopped by armed homeowners in pittsburg today. the first one was on leland avenue. around ten this morning, the resident heard a noise at his front door and was not expecting company. when he looked through his peep hole he saw a man he did not recognize trying to get into his house. he went and retrieved a gun and when he returned to the front door the burglar had made his way inside. >> the suspect engages in a physical altercation with the resident. during the altercation, the resident loses control of his firearm and he also sees the suspect lose a firearm, which we later determined to be a replica. during the struggle, our resident is able to retrieve a knife that was near the area and fatally stabbed the suspect in the neck. >> pam: police say the suspect is a 54 year old pittsburg resident with an extensive criminal record. police also detained two other people who might have also been involved in the burglary. >> the second story out of pittsburg involving a homeowner confronting an intruder happened around one this afternoon.

pieces together a crazy story in pittsburg where when it was over, the burglar was dead of. >> reporter: it began as a break-in and ended in bloodshed. >> i saw there was probably five, six, seven police officers and they were taking a body out of there on a gurney. >> reporter: neighbors say it's rare to hear about burglaries at this complex, but around 10:30 this morning pittsburg police say the man who lived here heard something strange at his door. >> the resident was home alone at this location heard what he describes as someone manipulating the front door knob of his residence. >> reporter: the suspected burglar, a 54-year-old convicted criminal with a long rap sheet, was carrying a fake gun. he probably never expected to run into a resident armed with a real gun. >> retreats back to his bedroom and gets a loaded firearm. by the time he makes it back to the front door is he confronted by the suspect now inside his house. >> reporter: authorities say a struggle followed during which both men lost their guns. the homeowner scrambled for knife and police say used it in self-defense.

francisco county jail facing charges of attempted murder and arson. >> pittsburg police have four burglary suspects in custody and credit a homeowner. neighbors saw four suspicious people leaving a home with valuables and officers caught they of the suspects and the fourth tried to hide in a neighbor's garage. the home owner was alerted by the dogs barking and found the 4th person hiding and held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived and made the arrest. police say jewelry and electronics were stolen and throw suspects of juveniles. >> the nhl owners are meeting in new york city to vote on the tentative deal struck over the weekend to end their lockout. if the majority of the owners i approve the deal, the nhl will move closer to the end the four month lock out. a majority of 700 hockey players must aroof the deal and the nhl is expected to begin the 48-game season january 19. training camp included the sharks are slated to open on sunday. >> after the next weather system moves in maybe they can play hockey outside. >> we look at how cold it will be. mike? >> we will flood

. >>> jana katsuyama live now in pittsburg with why neighbors say they were surprised. >> reporter: there's not a lot of these incidents here in the pittsburg. take a look across the street. police are still here around the apartment. there is yellow crime tape at the area where the stabbing happened. now the police officers just told me a few minutes ago that this happened when a resident apparently heard somebody fiddling with his front door. he then looked through the peephole and saw that there was somebody outside. here's some video from the scene. police say that the resident went to get a firearm but the suspect had already gone inside. there was a scuffle between the two. the residents gun was dropped as well as the suspect dropped a gun which was later determined to be a replica. that's when the suspect grabbed a gun and the resident stabbed the suspect in the neck and the suspect ended up dying here at the scene. neighbors tell us that they were just shocked. >> yeah i was home all day and i didn't hear anything. yeah i didn't hear anything. >> are they usually quiet over

that apartment complex in pittsburg. christin, what's the latest? >> reporter: well, this story has definitely taken a bizarre twist. when this all happened yesterday, it sounded pretty straightforward. police told us a man stabbed an intruder who was breaking into his home. today police are saying there is indeed a twist, that the entire break-in was orchestrated by the burglar victim's wife. >> our victim was targeted by his wife. >> reporter: pittsburg police say charmaine guerrero taijeron wanted her husband to move out of the apartment she shared with him. but he wouldn't. so she enlisted the man she was cheating with, matt parker, his brother charles, and two other men to intimidate her husband. >> she plotted the burglar with her boyfriend in an either to scare him and persuade him into leaving the residence. >> reporter: after two weeks of planning, yesterday morning, charles parker, salgado and lindsey used the keys to get into the house. they may have had plans to try to steal marijuana the husband was legally growing. but things quickly went south. when lindsey walked int

apartment. pittsburg police say four people are in custody accused of what began as an elaborate plot to scare the man. investigators say the woman was having an extramarital affair and wanted to frighten her husband out of the apartment they shared on east leeland lane. >> she plotted a burglary with her current boyfriend to scare him and persuade him into leaving the residence. >> police say they enlisted three other men to help. it happened tuesday morning. investigators say the husband got know a struggle with one of the other suspects lindsey. they stabbed lindsey to death in self defense. the woman, boyfriend and two other suspects were arrested. they are eligible for murder charges. >>> governor brown says the state budget deficit has dropped below $2 billion. that doesn't mean he plans a big spending spree. quite the opposite. his budget includes more money for education, thanks to voter- approved tax hikes. but it stresses continued fiscal restraint everywhere else. that means many state services that were cut in recent years will not be restored. >>> hats, gloves, warm coats

nice drive to pittsburg and concord. all mass transit is on time. eric? >> federal investigators have a new lead to follow in the crash of an oil tanker into a bay bridge tower. they will check reports of a glitch in a radar system that shifts maneuvers in the bay. >> the coast guard is looking into whether the radar equipment was working on the bay on monday when the ship out there, the "overseas raymar" ship the tower of the bay bridge on monday morning. this are still pictures of the damage done to the fenders of the business of the tower west of yerba buena island. the coast guard bulletin sent on tuesday says this could have been a radar malfunction in the beacons that guide the ships between the towers and the coast guard says it is not certain which beacons were on the blink and cal tran which oversees the radar says the main beacon was working fine. they are also saying that the fenders of the base of the tower were working fine. >> no structural damage to the bay bridge as a result and we will not have to do work on the bridge other than to repair the collision with the fender
